Proposed ‘Tips Bill’ may impact restaurant’s ability to impose service charge.

Proposed ‘Tips Bill’ may impact restaurant’s ability to impose service charge.

Conservative MPs are seeking to legislate the way waiters and other hospitality staff are currently receiving tips.

This proposal could see restaurant operators lose the power over service charge.

The new bill which is being advocated by MP Dean Russell, is argued to be a way of enshrining the rights of waiters and other hospitality staff to receive all of the money left behind by customers.

Currently, restaurant operators can control the distribution of service charge and tips. Making deductions from tips receive by the front of house staff.

Operators can redistribute the money to other staff within the restaurant or make deductions for the cost of running the restaurant itself.

The bill is set to be debated in parliament in September 2021.
